Dover is a town and major ferry port in the county of Kent, in South East England. It faces France across the narrowest part of the English Channel. Its strategic position has always been evident throughout its history: archaeological finds have revealed that the area has always been a focus for peoples entering and leaving Britain, which continues to this day.
The town gives its name both to the surrounding chalk cliffs, which a form a gateway to the port; and to the narrow sea passage - the Strait of Dover - on which it stands. Dover's history, because of its proximity to France, has always been of great strategic importance to Britain.
< br/> Attractions in the area include beaches and seaside resorts, several golf courses, Dover Castle, the famous White Cliffs, Caesar’s landing site and a number of National Trust and English Heritage houses and gardens - and the wonderful, historic city of Canterbury is an easy 20-minute drive away.
